As a serious spiritual seeker God and our service to Go should be our first priority. We do not need to cut ourselves off from our family, but we need to have God first.  This does not mean that we cut ourselves off from our family. It means that we may not be celebrating holidays and birthdays on the dates that  we normally might, but we can make alternative times and dates to be together with our families.  It is important to communicate to our family where we are at and what we are doing so there are not misunderstandings or hurt feelings.  It can all work.
